 Ice in the South

A view of our back yard and part of garden

It was kinda neat being iced in a few days. Many were without electricity though and that's no fun especially if you have only electric heat in your house. We have natural gas also and we enjoyed using candles for a few hours. Many were without power for almost a week and some may still be. This doesn't show up the ice very well.

 To Our Health

I am beginning to think more and more that dietary habits are partly to blame for  some of our illnesses and diseases as we grow older.

I watched recently as a commercial was advertizing a new drug for high cholesterol and said it could lower it 30 points in 30 days. At the end it said to check with your doctor to see that your liver wasn't damaged at the end of the 30 days. Say What?

My cholesterol was 222 and I decided to see if an apple a day would get it down. Guess what? It lowered it to 192 in 30 days (30 points) just eating one apple a day...that's all I did differently. And...those apples didn't damage my liver at all!

In 1999, I was put on a prescription for RA and it was 500 mg and directions were to take it twice a day. I continued taking it for a couple of years and one day I got flu like symptoms. I hurt all over, was weak and throwing up and honestly thought I had the flu...so I didn't go to the dr right away. On Monday of that week, I stopped having to go to the B R and I had no appetite. I was feeling better and not throwing up any more and I just wanted to lie there with my eyes closed and rest.

Well, I did that until Wednesday!!! Then when I still didn't have to go to the B R, I kinda got worried. So I told my DH. He came unglued...and we went to the dr...a different one. He put me in the hospital and kept me overnight and sent me to another one who kept me over night and then sent me to his professor that had taught him in med school and I was in the hospital there for two weeks.

He saw the medications I had been taking and came to the conclusion that the arthritis prescription was what shut my kidneys down.

I had to have dialysis twice but he saved my life and now has me on a safe one for OA. I didn't have RA after all.

Back to the diet thing. I have had some kind of rheumatism diagnosed since I was 8 years old. Sugar hurts RA and OA in some people. So do the night-shade veggies. Night shades are: Irish potatoes, tomatoes (gasp!) egg plant and peppers. (Not black pepper, thank goodness.) When I eat lots of those four I am in terrific pain and when I eat sugar 5 or 6 days in a row...I can hardly walk. I am learning to eat them in moderation. My pain is very managable and I walk without a limp, when I leave sugar out.

About high cholesterol again: I can hardly eat a whole apple now because I got so tired of them...but carrots will do the same thing...I had to figure most of this out for myself....so thought if it might possibly help someone else I should put it on my blog.  Try it, it doesn't harm anything and if it helps...Great!

 An Old Letter

Today in the mail, I received a letter my mother had written in 1936 to her mother(before I was born). What a treasure!  Her sister sent it to me along with pictures of my mother and our grandmother.

She had cut twigs of hair from my brother, age 4 and my sister who was 19 months and mailed them to her mother.  They were still taped to the page. She didn't know who to send it to, my sister or me and since I wasn't born yet at that time, I thought my sister should have it. I did copy everything though for myself and gave her the originals. She was thrilled as much as I. My brother is like the typical guy. He doesn't want to keep up with it...but he's glad we have it.  (smile)

Our mother drew around my sister's hand and sent it to her mother....and the locks of hair from my brother and sister. This is part of the letter our mother sent to our grandmother in 1936, before I was born. Our aunt (mother's sister) sent it to me recently.  I photocopied it and gave the original to my sister, whose little hand tracing this is. Our mother died when we were 3,5 and 8.

 Garden in January

I am looking forward to spring planting time, but today I went out and picked spinach and turnips and green onions.  I planted those turnips and spinach in August and October and they have made it this far without freezing.  The ground will have to freeze and stay frozen for 3-4 days before it will hurt them. Here in the south, we actually have three growing seasons...early spring, summer and late fall when we plant winter crops...like lettuce, spinach and turnips. Green peas and sugar snaps can be planted in January or February.

God's bounty is so wonderful!  We should be so thankful for what He sends and not take anything for granted.  We don't have to worry about this spinach having some kind of "bad bug" on it.

I dread the time when we will be too old to raise a garden.  Some of our gardening friends have already given up on it and they are only a few years older.  I hope we don't do that.  DH's mother had a little garden until she was 96.  If she can do it, surely we can...if we live that long. (Smile)

 PA-PA'S MEATLOAF

I never cared for meatloaf when we were growing up nor when I was grown either.  But one day I was sick and DH took over the kitchen.  He is always experimenting and sometimes comes up with some great ideas. This was one of those days.  He ate and went to work (He only works from 1-5 the last few years.)  Around 2 P.M. I woke up and meandered into the kitchen and there on the table was his concoction.  It was this meatloaf recipe.  Well.... I tasted it and went back for more...and more...and more!   It was very good for someone who doesn't like meatloaf.  Our grandkids didn't like meatloaf until they tried this one.  It is kinda spicy but delicious.

Pa-Pa’s Meatloaf

1 lb ground beef

1/2 lb sausage

1 egg

2 ribs celery, diced

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

2 teaspoons sage

2 T. picante sauce

1 large diced onion

˝ can Rotel

 10-12 crumbled saltine crackers,

Mix all ingredients and shape into loaf. 2 small loaves will cook faster. Decorate top with catsup and bake at 350 degrees about 45 minutes - 1 hour. Let cool a few minutes. Any meat will slice better if left to cool a while.
